The language of myth allows a story to be a part of a wider universal
context. Though these stories and archetypes may resonate very closely with me
on a personal level, their creation derives from collective material and their
power lies in the meaning and the broader truth that myths convey. Culled images
from magazines, books, newspapers (printed accessible ephemera) are manipulated
and reassembled in an order to activate the archetypes that lie therein. I never
start a piece with particulars in mind, serendipity and the personal unconscious
guide the composition and the personal becomes collective/conscious once the
stories start to emerge. |

Between Heaven and Earth is an installation by Terry Jenoure
that combines her hand-sewn, soft figures and her original
soundscape of multi-track violin and vocal music. Her work
is developed through the integrating, molding, and sewing
of recycled natural fabrics, buttons, paint, markers, and
other found materials. In merging her fabric works with music,
the artist has created an environment where these figures,
or Blessings as she calls them, may live. About
these figures, all of which are women, she says, There
are important sounds and feelings in their world. Also, there
is something special about the impact they make when they
re grouped. It is a force created by women who dare to be
certain and use up all the space!

Curcio's exhibition consists of a series of paintings and other works
created from found objects in the tradition of Dadaism.
The work explores the issues of: materialism, branding, status, symbolism of objects in our consumer culture. Some of the objects used in the exhibition are: crystal diamonds, jewels, Burberry plaid and Tiffany blue objects, etc. The meaning of the title of the exhibition, Bling, encompasses the sundry associations dealing with class, culture, and consumption that drives our economy beyond the provision of basic needs. This exhibit was supported in part by a grant from the Northampton
Arts

VIDEO INSTALLATION University Gallery The University Gallery is in the Fine Arts Center at UMass and has a
permanent collection of late 20 Century and contemporary
art. opening reception 3/28, 6-8 pm This exhibition celebrates the sensual basis of color, its subjectivity,
and its natural capacity
to convey feeling and evoke emotion. It focuses on the ability of color to
overcome the categorical distinctions of form/content and figure/ground
and reach beyond the constructs of thought directly to the senses and the
emotions.
Color extends beyond the objects before the viewer and moves directly to
the viewer's subjective responses.
Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens creates "propositions" or
"interventions"
that explore the relationship between time and space.
Los Angeles artist, Diana Thater's video installations focus on the
relationship among animals, human beings, and technology. Her
site-specific video projections use a palette of red, green, and blue, the basic
chromatic elements of video projection technology.
During the opening reception a gallery talk between artist Ann Veronica
Janssens and curator Gregory Salzman will shed additional light on the
exhibition.

Artist reception 3/29 5-8PM Gaddier Rosario's Artist Statement: Art is finding myself and refinding
myself in each painting. An inevitable self-portrait in time and space. I search
and I search for myself amongst the threads of forms and colors, telling my
ideas and ideals in the painting. An invitation to a mute world: where you may
converse with the self that inhabits each one of us.
My art is autonomous but not puristic, it is polluted through life,
rendered sensible to the figures and symbols of the era and the signs of time:
the raw matter that is transfigured by art as an offering beyond its immediacy.
Always searching to freely capture the sensibility that sur rounds me and, as
its consequence, express my own truth. |

Lisa Leary will exhibit new drawings and paintings inspired by poetry
(her own)
at the Grubbs Gallery at the Reed Fine Arts Center at the
Williston-Northampton School in Eastampton, Ma from April 2-29, 2007.
Reception for the artist is scheduled for Sunday, April 15th from 2-4
pm.
(Note: The above image is of Lisa's earlier work. You'll just have to go to the show to see the latest.) This body of work is from her "Poem Series" and some work from that
series and other work by the artist can be seen on her web-site, www.LisaLeary.com
Leary states in her artist statement for the exhibition that a common
theme that runs through her work "concerns metaphor and what lies beneath the
surface of things".
She is interested in "how experience becones poetry and how poetry
becomes experience".
The exhibit is dedicated to her late husband, Steven Whiton Leary
(Williston, 1966) who passed away in September of 2006 from a short and
courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

opening Thur April 5, 5-8 Francine Trearchiz Ozereko shows ceramic pieces and installations and Lynn
Peterfreund shows new monotypes, monoprints and etchings. In addition, Francine
shows prints and Lynn shows clay works.
After sharing studio time in their clay and print workshops, the artists began to explore the idea of freeing forms -- liberating forms from their visual habitats. Francine frees froms from vessels and Lynn frees forms from
gravity.

Printmaking is traditionally a pretty toxic art medium, involving the
use of solvents and other dangerous chemicals to create images. Zea Mays
Printmaking s mission is to promote the use of safer and non-toxic printmaking
methods through research, education and practice. Our exhibition program
seeks to showcase the wonderful achievements in the field of safer and nontoxic
printmaking. This particular exhibition brings together the work of five
artists working in nontoxic monotype for an in-depth look at many of the
possibilities of working green . In addition, the exhibition
presents the work through the discerning eye of one of our region's preeminent
art curators.

Painters Valerie Bogdan, Marjorie Kramer and sculptor Shannon Matthew Long
are brought together in this show due to the common importance of nature in
their work. From Virginia, New York City, and Vermont the calm of the forest
offers these artists a grounding essential to their studio practices.
Working in stone, metal, and wood, the process begins for Shannon Long in
the forest and stream beds around his home in Montgomery VT. Collecting River
rocks and raw materials for his sculptures, a dialogue begins with the materials
and their natural origins. This dialogue extends through the working process in
the studio to the final sculptures. Shannon creates sculpture that is not only
beautiful in terms of form and textures, but also builds a reverence for the
process in nature that created his raw materials. The time in the woods also
becomes a grounding force in his life, enabling his hand to create a calm and
grounded feeling to his sculpture.
Valerie Bogdan's paintings on paper are a direct reflection of her love of
the forest. Escaping the struggles of living in NYC, hiking became an
increasingly important part of her life, and a greater influence in her work.
Now living in Virginia, hiking in the forest and spending time
in her yard amongst the trees ,shrubs, and birds has inspired the
works in this show. The paintings are luscious layers of dripped, washed , and
fluid strokes of paint, ink , and charcoal on a heavy paper. In her artist
statement Valerie says " In the painting process the tree becomes
abstracted and more loosely interpreted. Although I may begin the piece with a
general idea in mind, the end result is always a fusion of planning and
chance". These paintings draw us in, they create a space for
contemplation, whether it is about the forest we see or the greater ponderances
of life.
Beginning as a summer break with friends from the pace of NYC ,
Lowell VT has become home to painter Marjorie Kramer, and the landscape
has had a direct influence on her recent work. Marjorie paints
directly from experience. In her artist statement she says ,
"I enjoy the act of seeing in time, finding passages, jumps through space,
and geometric orchestrations that are thrilling". In her forest scenes, general
stores or parking lots, there is a sense of getting the moment. Feeling the calm
of that moment in time and space, every brushstroke is immediate and yet
carefully considered and well place. There is a joy in the capturing of color
and light of that experience that make Marjorie's paintings lively and
worth more than a second look.

6-8 PM Lead guitarist Matthew Ruby Shippee, rhythm guitarist Jack Brown, and
double bass player Daniel Pac form a solid improvising trio that is sometimes
augmented by guest violin, accordion, or clarinet. The group is known for
performing this hot jazz with the kind of spontaneous and sensitive playfulness
that spawned the style.
Since starting in Fall 2004, Swing Caravan has played steadily in the
Northampton area, including a showcase at the local Django in June festival,
First Night Northampton (two years in a row), the Valley Free Radio benefit
concert, Sundays at the Black Sheep Café (subbing for house band Gypsy
Wranglers), Pothole Pictures at Memorial Hall, and private functions. Since
October 2005 Swing Caravan has also been playing a regular (every other Friday)
gig at Mocha Mayas Café, the new hill-town music hotspot in Shelburne Falls.
Whether playing the fast and fiery tunes or evocative ballads, the
band displays a passion for sharing this uplifting music with audiences. The
band members share a great respect for the tradition of Gypsy Jazz, heard in how
they seek to adhere to most aspects of the genre-the classic gypsy rhythm, the
stabbing and melodic guitar lines, and a love of Django's classic repertoire.
But Swing Caravan isnt afraid to try new things with the music, like bringing
rock and world music aesthetics into the mix from time to time as they bring

The Artisan Gallery is pleased to announce
the opening of an exhibit of the beautiful wheel thrown and hand made ceramics
of Liz Smith.
Liz, a resident of Little Rock, Arkansas, has been studying ceramics
and making pottery since 1991. She received her undergraduate degree from
Skidmore College and apprenticed for a year with highly respected ceramic artist
Toshiko Takaezu. Her Master of Fine Arts degree was awarded in 2000 by Louisiana
State University. Liz is now an assistant professor of Art at the University of
Central Arkansas.
Liz talks about her work:
"The most intriguing aspect of making functional work for me is that it is
an art form readily
accepted into people s lives. Mine is a commitment to the idea that art is
most effective when it is
connected to repeated daily experience revealing itself through use over
time. This commitment is one that consistently brings me back to the functional
object. Our contemporary context often finds us less and less connected in a
physical way to experience and to others. I am compelled to make work that
proposes an alternative to this path and highlights the continuing relevance of
the handcrafted object.
Functional pots both demand and create sensual experience. They are meant
not only to be seen
but touched, used and pondered, their weight felt, their surfaces pressed
against hands and lips.
Their function aids in nourishing the body; the physical act of their
creation links me to the
user, and their references and materials link us both to the long history
of art and ceramics. This complex mix of physicality, community and history
keeps me continually engaged in the process of making.
Currently I am most interested in 18th and 19th century European porcelain
from factories such as
Meissen and Sevres. It is the idea of the grandiose celebrations for which
these objects were made that I am so attracted to. The objects acted as decadent
and ostentatious displays of wealth but also as markers of the importance of
eating and drinking, of the meal enjoyed and shared with others. In my work I
embrace the idea of decoration, grandiosity, and ostentation while infusing
these elaborate objects with a casualness through material, process and surface
that may be more appropriate to our
everyday utilitarian activities. These objects are not meant to be passive
actors in the shared meal but rather defining characters. They are not meant to
be used only during celebratory occasions but rather to support the notion that
every occasion is celebratory. It is of the utmost importance to me that people
use these objects, as it is only through use that their purpose can be
fulfilled."

My work portrays trees in a reverent and even allegorical style; these trees are a physical connection to an ancient and divine energy. I have used a Hobo 8x10 camera to create most of the images on display. My use of a box camera (literally a wooden box) with a fixed lens and shallow depth of field along with Fuji color paper as a negative produces a ghostly, impressionistic quality with subtle, yet rich, colors." Photographer Andrea Lawrence gives us a menagerie of images manifesting from seeing the world directly without filters. These photographs are taken in the Miksang - or 'Good Eye' in Tibetan - tradition, developed by Michael Wood under the guidance of the Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa. The photos reveal a commitment to pushing the shutter in a moment of seeing which stops the mind. The images capture a freshness freed from rules and mental constructs - leaving only the direct perceptions of a mind unattached, clear, uncomplicated and joyous. Tu, SA, SU 1 - 6 PM The Robert Floyd Photo Gallery (Southampton, MA)(park in the Town Hall
Parking Lot)is proud to announce limited edition black and white photographs
will be on exhibit and sale throughout April. Many images never previously
exhibited in The Gallery will be hung in both Gallery rooms. The first exhibit
will concentrate entirely on the "British Invasion" from April 1 thru April 15.
Then, other artists, mainly from the USA will grace the walls from April
17 thru April 30. All images are from Barrie's famous Legend Series, a portfolio
of one hundred infamous images.
Barrie Wentzell, an internationally recognized photographer, was born
in the mists of Northern England, now living in Toronto. Barrie was the chief
photographer for Melody Maker Magazine, forerunner to Rolling Stone Magazine
from 1965 - 1975. Barrie's commitment to his work coupled with his uncanny
ability to capture the essence of the subjects he portrays has gained him public
and critical acclaim. As Barrie once confided, "The picture gives you an
impression, the music tells you everything. I wasn't trying to make them God, I
was trying to make them truthful."
Barrie's "Legends" include Neil Young, Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin,
Leonard Cohen, Ian Anderson, Robert Plant, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Leon
Russell, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, Grace Slick and Dr.
John just to name a few. |

teacher between New York City and Amherst. Kearns will introduce us to the
leading art incubators of New York: PIEROGI - THE gallery in Williamsburg. Owner
Joe Amrhein will talk about the history of the gallery, its impact on
Williamsburg and his famous flat files.
SMACK MELLON director Kathleen Gilrain will guide us through the anchor art
space at DUMBO in Brooklyn.
EXIT ART - grand dame of art incubators. We will get to go behind the
scenes.

THIS SECTION OFFICIALLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION I very recently switched to this new template. It did not convert my old template and tech help at Constant Contact confirmed that I need to move all my information over myself. Most of it, like text data, can be cut and pasted. But the links, which originated from an entry into a constant contact template, are assigned trackback URLs which allow for comparative metrics and this causes crazy things to happen. So I am starting this section over, as I already did with the rest of the newsletter, to fit into the new template. When I paste links in one at a time the link name appears as the URL plus the trackback data like this: http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=nhefh6bab.0.xhxbgzbab.jrfsprbab.1&ts=S0232&p=http %3A%2F%2Fwww.polturgeon.com And when I try to paste the whole list at once it deletes all the URL data and becomes a list of links to nothing, sort of like an excremental link. So, I am going through an old URL list and clicking on each link and then copying the link name and target into this space. So It will be under construction for a bit. Just look at what this template has doen to my font sizes all over this newsletter. They are all over the place and out of control. And I know what I am doing but this template has other ideas. Maybe by next week I will be once again master of the formatting of this newsletter but for now, I throw up my hands and have a call in to tech help.
